Understanding the Human Aspects of the Bear Part Trade in South East Asia
December 5, 2018 • 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm
ABS Seminar
Presented by Jenny Glikman, Associate Director in Community Engagement, San Diego Zoo (website)
Abstract: The trade in bear bile and other bear parts in Southeast Asia and China is a leading driver in the decline of Asian bear populations, and is a serious conservation challenge. A team from San Diego Zoo Global (SDZG) has developed a protocol and survey instrument that has been used by organizations across the region to gather data on understanding the attitudes and motivations behind wildlife products. SDZG also offers training on social science and in conducting HD projects, and analytic capability. Findings from Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam will be presented to summarize what has been done so far in understanding and addressing the demand reduction of wildlife part usage.
