ABS Seminar Co-hosted with Ecology and Evolutionary Biology

Presented by Corey Welch, Director, STEM Scholars Program, Iowa State University (website)

Abstract: There is a growing body of literature demonstrating the barriers (and solutions) to improve the successful selection, retention, and development of underrepresented (UR = low income, minority, and first generation) students in ecology and evolutionary biology. A summary of recommendations and examples of successful programs will be highlighted and the latest research on graduate selection, training, and faculty recruitment. Dr. Welch will also show data from his relatively nascent undergraduate training program and how it differs from traditional STEM Diversity Programs. Additionally, a summary of undergraduate research training conferences (SACNAS, AISES, and ABRCMS) will be presented as an underutilize pool for recruitment and training of UR-students.
