Collaborative Multidisciplinary Research Award

The Applied Biodiversity Science Program will award approximately two Collaborative Multidisciplinary Research grants each year for the next five years.

Purpose: To support collaborative research relevant to the ABS Program. Priority will be given to truly multidisciplinary projects.

Amount: $4,000 per team of two or more students.

Use of Funds: Funds must be used in accordance with the final approved research budget. Funding can be used for field expenses, travel, conference participation, lab work, supplies, etc.

Who can apply: Teams of at least two ABS students with approved Learning Plans. Participation by ABS Faculty members is welcome and encouraged.

Application deadline: December 15, 2018

Guidelines for submission: Please submit the following information to the ABS Program Coordinator:

  1.  Investigator Information
    • Student PI’s – For each student PI please provide
      • The student name, advisor name, academic department
      • Updated CV
      • One paragraph describing your past, present, and future involvement in the ABS program.
      • A one paragraph description of graduate research project (this is your main thesis research NOT a description of the multidisciplinary research proposed for this grant)
      • A statement describing this student’s role in the multidisciplinary research proposed for this grant.
    • Faculty members – For projects where faculty members will be playing a significant role in the collaborative research please provide the following information
      • Faculty member name, academic department
      • Faculty CV
      • A statement describing the faculty member’s role in the multidisciplinary research proposed for this grant
  2.  Proposed investigation –
    • Research statement – MAXIMUM 4 pages single-spaced text (1-inch margins, 11pt font)
      • Background on the specific question(s) and study system
      • Significance of the proposed research for Applied Biodiversity Sciences
      • Specific Research Objectives
      • Methods – Description of your experimental design and how that design will allow you to address your research objectives
      • Description of the interdisciplinary approach – Why does your project require an interdisciplinary approach? How is your team interdisciplinary and how will it work together to achieve your objectives?
    • Literature Cited, Figures, and Tables (not included in the 4-page maximum limit).
    • Budget (not included in the 4 page maximum limit)
      • A line-by-line budget
        • If budget exceeds $4000 indicate if funding has already been received or is being sought from other sources.
      • One-page budget justification.
  3.  Advisor’s letter – a supporting letter or email from each participating student’s faculty advisor approving the proposed activities.
